Ageism is considered or defined as discrimination of someone based off of their age. Ageism has an influence on society because it has a negative impact on people that are older due to misconceptions. Society views people that are older as incapable of performing particular duties and task due to their age hindering them. Being that many individuals that are older are just as capable and healthy as a younger person this is a misconception and people shouldnt be judged based off of this. In some cases people may be discriminating when it comes to applying for employement due to the false assumption that they arent capable of perfoming the job to perfection. (

¢ What is the Age Discriminitation in Employment Act (ADEA)? How does the ADEA address issues for the aging population?

The Age Discrimination in Employment Act prohibits discrimination againast potential employee due to their age. This prohibits employees from setting an age limit on who is and is not eligible for obtaining employement with a particular organization. The ADEA addresses this issue by setting a standard for employers to abide by and the level of respect that should be shown to potential employees. This act gives people of all ages to obtain employement with each agency without age being a factor even if they are only hired part time or only to perform certain task they are not and cannot be denied employement entirely for this reason. In the face of rising productivity and affluence, older workers find themselves disadvantaged in their efforts to retain employment, and especially to regain employment when displaced from jobs.By this law being in place seniors dont feel as though they are at a disadvantage due to their age despite their capabilities as an employee. Setting limits on a age for employement is not on a form of discrimination but it is unfair and in some cases a misconception to the employee that still need to earn a living. This gives employee the opportuinity to be judged based off of their potiential and what they have to offer the organization. (

The numbers of the aging population are expected to rise in the future. In the year of 2009 the number of people that were 65 years an dolder were 39.6 million. By the year of 2030 it is estimated to be 72.1 million older persons which is twice the number of living people this age in the year of 2000. People are living longer than what they use to many years ago which is having an impact on many services that are made available to seniors and issues pertaining to their retirement as well as the age that they can retire without being penalized. (

¢ What types of legislation may or may not be affected by the aging population?

The aging population is affected by this issue because seniors will have to work longer in order to receive retirement benefits because the age of retirement will increase. People will have to find other means of income if the would like to retirement earlier than the retirement age without being penalized financially. There will be a rise in the demand for health care services that are made available to senior citzens. This may have an impact on families due to the financial concern and strain of ensuring that their loved ones are provided for and have the neccesities in the event that they are forced to retire early.

Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits continue to play a key role in reducing elderly poverty, especially among women and people of color. If Social Security benefits did not exist, an estimated 44 percent of the elderly would be poor today, assuming no changes in behavior. TTY/TDD services are provided free of charge for local calls and are available for individuals that are hearing impaired which is a convenience to people with this particular disability.

Historically, society has tended to isolate and segregate individuals with disabilities, and, despite some improvements, such forms of discrimination against individuals with disabilities continue to be a serious and pervasive social problem. In present day when people that are in a wheel chair ride public transporation there is a section that is free for a wheel chair to be placed at as well as straps available to hold them in place while the bus is in motion. Some unique circumstances and issues that people with disabilities have encountered is mainly being discriminated against in various forms. Many people underestimate people that are disable thinking that they are incapable of perfoming certain activites and jobs. Overtime there have been several different resources made available to people that are blind, hearing impaired, and physically disabled, that has helped them to be able to perform the same task as an ordinary person which has alter the misconception that society once had of these people. With the help of seeing eye dogs, services for hearing impaired individuals, and alternatives that made available to physically disable individuals opportunities have been made for these people to not only work but live normal lives despite their disability. (

In addition to the rules and regulations brought forth by the Americans Disability Act of 1990 people are more informed of their rights and the services that are made available to them as a disable person. This not only helps them to maintain a sastifactory lifestyle as it perstains to earning a living and services that are available to them. In present day there are apartment communities built for people that are disable. This allows them to get additional assistance with the things that they need and live amongst people that they fit in with or have something in common with. (

The act helps to protect idividuals with disabilities as well as ensure that they have the same opportunites as individuals that are considered to be perfectly normal. The fair housing act was amended in the year of 1988 to include individuals that have disabilities. This act prohibits a property from refusing housing to a disable person, setting different terms and conditions for individuals that are disable, denying member or the use of services to a disable person, falsly deny a housing for inspection, rental, or sale, or leasing/saleing a property for a high price to make an additional profit.
