Even though agencies are taking immediate action to prevent the destruction, what happened on that day will still affect all the living creatures of the ocean. Animals such as sea lions, seals, and over 70 different kinds of birds are located in Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, and this is now threatened by the Selendang Ayu oil spill occurrence. The Unalaska Island is always visited by sea ducks, seabirds, waterfowl and even eagles, ravens and foxes who feed themselves by oiled-birds on the shore.
Thousands of birds are also feared of eating oil-killed fish and other animals thus will also kill them. Today, different species of birds are found either dead or can still be saved through rehabilitation. Researchers say that the actual number of dead animals has reached 20 to 30 times, meaning around 30,000 dead animals because of the disaster. Oil spill occurrence also affected lots of families especially those who depend their living in fishing.
Fishes such as salmons, tanner crab, and halibut are at risk because they feed on the areas where oil is spreading. When this happens, people in the community will also be on high risk of taking in oil-affected fish. Selendang Ayu is truly a devastating event ever happened on the ocean. It will not just kill thousands of animals, it also threatens human life. This kind of incident should be prevented from happening again.
