The word deviance mean odd or unacceptable behavior, but in the sociological sense of the word, deviance is simply any violation of societys norms. Deviance can range from something minor, such as a traffic violation, to something major, such as murder. The word deviance can mean a bunch of various things to people, due to different people having opinions on whether something is violating a social norm or not. For example, religion, no matter what religion you are, someone in the world is going to find your activity or behavior to be considered a violation of social norms. That deviant example is a non-criminal deviance, but there is also criminal deviance. Theft, kidnapping, and even murder can be called criminal deviance because it breaks the norm, but other deviant acts, for example, downloading illegal music on the computer can be passed on not being deviant. Crime is actions which break the law in the country. Deviance is closely related to crime but refers more to the cause of such crimes deviance consists of those acts which do not follow the norms and expectations of a particular social group.

Crime is certainly a big part of our society, and it even dominates popular culture. There are plenty of TV shows, movies, and books you can think of that deal with crime in one form or another? A frequent plot in these stories involves the good guy crossing over the line in order to bring the bad guy to justice. The good guy is never punished for breaking the rules or laws, all is forgiven because he or she caught the bad guy. In real life, the police must follow due process. This is a simple but very important concept: the enforcers of criminal justice must operate within the boundaries of the law. This ensures fair treatment and respect for the rights of the accused, including giving them a chance to defend themselves. Due process is part of the Bill of Rights its covered in the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution. The government and its representatives must follow the rules to help ensure justice. We can all agree in one form or another it gets twisted and broken depending on who you are.

Punishment is another extremely important concept in our society. It helps teach correct behavior to those who are deviant. Children are punished by their parents, students by their teachers, workers by their bosses, etc. When it comes to criminal deviance, punishment can range from a fine to incarceration to execution. When a crime has been committed or someone has been wronged, almost everyone believes that someone should have to pay. Right? This is probably why we like cop shows, we feel a great sense of satisfaction when the guilty are punished at the end of the episode, when justice has been served.

I do think these punishments work as well as restorative justice. You might not think so because you have people who get out and do the same thing and get sent back in jail. I just believe there are different approaches to different people. What works for me may not work for the next person. If I were to do a crime all it takes is a talk of were this might have come from all of a sudden, or just a basic understanding to my side then Im good, I wont do another crime ever. Then theres other people who wont understand until they are punished in jail or executed. Different strokes for different folks.
