1. Based on the readings in this unit, what do the readings in this unit reveal about diversity within the new nation? Use at least three specific examples from the reading selections. Your answer should be at least one complete paragraph. Answer: Diversity is a variety of different things which in this case is your race. Diversity that was revealed to me is that Phillis Weatherly and Equiano were both enslaved African Americans that lived as a slaved for only a portion of their lives but during that time they were treated terribly. Another diversity I learned was within a new nation was very diverse nation because of peoples thoughts about race. A big diversity I thought was the diversity of religion and how it changed religion. But in the end the Star Spangled Banner connected the nation.
2. Throughout history, literature has been used as a form of protest. Choose two selections from this unit and explain why they can be thought of as protest literature. Discuss each selection in its own complete paragraph. Answer: Olaudah Equiano was a slave since age 13. When he got to the age of 21 his owner allowed him to buy himself off of slavery, and in this story he is telling us about how he felt about being a slave and how it was very horrible to be a slave on a ship with being starved, surrounded by sickness, and mistreatment. Benjamin Banneker letter to Thomas Jefferson was thought of as protest literature because he was writing an almanac to secretary of state Thomas Jefferson in recognition on how to abolishing slavery should be. Banneker felt in Jeffersons life he should agree with him that slavery was truly cruel and nothing but misery.
